Ever wish you could combine your love of chili, hot dogs, and pizza into one taste-bud-tempting dish? Well, search no further – Carson Kitchen has answered the call with their Chili Cheese Dog Flatbread ($14), featuring a perfectly crisp and airy crust topped with hearty chili, knockwurst, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and Fritos. Yes, we said Fritos.
Presented on a rustic, wooden serving board, the flatbread arrives to the table radiating aromas reminiscent of mom’s homemade chili, and bratwursts grilling on backyard barbeques. Somewhere between an appetizer and an entrée, the portion size is perfect for a light lunch or as a robust starter for a group. The knockwurst is smoky and buttery, offering just the right amount of spice to stand up to the flavor-packed chili, while the sour cream drizzle and melted mild cheddar blend charmingly into the mix. The Fritos are nothing short of magical, as essential to the success of the dish as pickles on a Cuban sandwich, or French fried onions on green bean casserole.
If you find yourself in need of a cold brew to compliment this unique flatbread, the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier ($7) is a solid summer selection. Perfectly crisp and wheat-y with the subtle spice of clove and lemon, this beer stands up incredibly well against the one-two flavor punch of chili and knockwurst. If a glass of wine is more your style, we suggest the mildly acidic and fruit-filled Peachy Canyon Incredible Red Zinfandel ($9), or the not-too-sweet, bright and citrusy Dr. L Riesling ($7).
As a seasonal menu item, there’s a chance that the Chili Cheese Dog Flatbread could be ending its run in the next few weeks, so be sure to swing by Carson Kitchen and get your flatbread fix before it’s too late. After all, regret is the wurst.
