Downtown Denizen - Malory Mendonsa

Malory Mendonsa
Owner, Downtown Beauty Company at Downtown Container Park

What is your proudest accomplishment?
Opening my own salon and being 25 is pretty incredible. I am truly lucky. I am also one of the colorists for this year’s Hairstylist of the Year Finalists at the North American Hairdressing Awards. It's very exciting.

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
That's easy - hair! I have been an educator since 2009. I started with Carlton Hair Institute in Los Angeles. Then after moving to Las Vegas, I was an Educator for G Beauty Institute, and now I am currently an educator for Schwarzkopf Professional.

Do you have a favorite quote?
I have two: "Fashions fade, style is eternal." - Yves Saint Laurent
"I do maintain that if your hair is wrong, your entire life is wrong." - Steven Patrick Morrissey

If you could try out any job for a day, what would you like to try?
I would be a country western sanger. Complete with the traditional Nudie Suit and big hair. The higher the hair, the closer to God.

Who was your childhood celebrity crush?
Prince. One night while working in Century City, my friend Nathan surprised me at work with tickets to see Prince play at a private event. Sheila E. performed with him and he played "1999" for the first time since he said he wouldn't anymore. I just about died! I'll love him forever.

Which store would you choose to max out your credit card?
Coco Fennell. She is an amazing dress designer in London – lots of baby doll dresses, Peter Pan collars. She even makes a flamingo dress. And she ships internationally.

What was the last great book you read?
The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse. I lived in Echo Park for many years and it gives great insight into the dynamics of the local culture.

What was the last concert you attended?
Shows are a weekly thing for me, the most exciting. Jenny Lewis at Brooklyn Bowl. She played with Nikki Lane. It was life changing.

What is Downtown to you?
Downtown is where the past and future come together and make the heartbeat of Las Vegas.

What is your favorite Downtown venue?
On any given night you can probably find me prancing up and down Fremont East at The Griffin, The Bunkhouse Saloon, or Pinches grabbing a blood orange margarita after closing up shop. It’s the best margarita in Vegas.
